Is being too relaxed at work a bad sign for your career? Absolutely, it is something I've learned the hard way.
We all know that feeling of being overwhelmed at work. The endless tasks, shifting priorities or juggling multiple projects can leave you feeling stressed and drained. You start dreaming of that perfect holiday, the one where you can truly unplug for at least a month! I've always said my ideal workplace is "the workplace where I don't feel the need for a holiday!" (You can read more about that in my article about the ideal workplace here).
But what happens when you swing too far in the other direction? When you become too relaxed at work? Trust me, it's not as good as it sounds. Let's explore together why being too relaxed at work can be a really bad sign for your career.
Are you just going through the motions at work? Do you feel like you're coasting through your daily tasks without much effort or enthusiasm? If so, you might be complacent. I know I've been there and it's harmful for the long run. Complacency is a dangerous place to be because it means you're not moving forward, not learning anything new or achieving much.
I've definitely felt a lack of motivation at different points in my career. It often stems from feeling unchallenged and disengaged. Your enthusiasm just plummets. For me, bad management decisions, toxic workplace or no room for promotion add to the lack of motivation.
Without the drive to innovate or improve processes productivity can suffer. It's a natural consequence of not being invested in your work. Low productivity is bad for any company overall. If it's bad for the company, it's bad for the employees in the end.
Regardless of what you say or try to hide your colleagues can sense if you are too relaxed. It can be demotivating for them or even make them angry if they feel you're not helpful or providing enough support. And trust me you don't want to get bad feedback from your coworkers!
Being too relaxed will also catch the eye of your management. With the current state of the market being what it is that's the last thing you want! Companies are looking for ways to reduce their budgets so they might nitpick any reason for that.
From my experience it's always good to be involved in different work groups or initiatives. Prove yourself worthy by solving difficult problems. Earn your coworkers' respect by showing them excellent expertise and a professional attitude.
This is a tricky one because it's not always entirely within your control. The work environment and company culture play a big role. But here are a few things you can try:
Being too relaxed at work can have serious consequences for your career. By recognizing the signs of complacency and taking steps to break free from its grasp you'll be better equipped to stay motivated productive and competitive in today's fast-paced business environment. Remember a little bit of stress is okay but excessive relaxation can lead down a path of stagnation and missed opportunities. Don't let it happen to you!
