Landing your dream job in this volatile market feels like trying to find a gold in the Wild West. Understanding why recommendations are now essential for getting hired is not just helpful, it's crucial.

Honestly I never imagined the job market could get this intense. I always had the feeling that IT people will be on demand. Some factors are essentially contributing to this situation:

  • Companies reducing workforce in order to survive the tough times
  • Youngsters are entering the market and some of them expect high salaries for their University degree
  • AI is prevalently used in many aspects, including recruiting process
  • Employers are having more and more expectations from a candidate (for less money of course)
  • Fears of recession makes the markets collapse

All of these lead to a flood of available CVs on the market between which is hard to stand out from the crowd.

The rise of online presence

Remember when social media was just for sharing vacation photos? Now it's your digital handshake. Employers are all over LinkedIn and job boards hunting for the perfect fit. If you don't have a strong online presence you're basically invisible. Recruiters are skimming profiles resumes cover letters faster than ever. If you're not immediately impressive you're overlooked.

The power of recommendations

I used to think a killer resume and a decent LinkedIn profile were enough. I was proud of my 7 pages CV! Now things have changed. Recommendations are like the secret sauce. They're social proof that you're not just good at talking yourself up. Recommendations offer tangible evidence from people who've seen you in action. They build trust and show potential employers you're the real deal.

I was recommended to 1-2 positions in my career and I also returned the favor once. It benefits both sides: you find more about the day to day job from a trustworthy person whereas the company will be assured that you are a good fit from the employee who recommends you!

Why recommendations are now essential

Seriously in this insane job market recommendations aren't just a nice-to-have; they're a must-have. You might try it for yourself: apply for dozens of positions and you might not get a single answer! Here's why this is happening:

  • Increased Competition: You can't just apply and pray anymore. You need an edge. A glowing recommendation can be that edge.
  • Digital Footprint: Your online reputation is everything. A solid recommendation can bury any old embarrassing stuff or balance a questionable Tweet you made years ago.
  • Trust and Credibility: Let's face it everyone exaggerates on their resume. Recommendations offer that much-needed layer of trustworthiness because they come from people who've actually worked with you. Know how many employers complain that they don't find solid candidates.

How to get started

Okay so how do you actually get these magical recommendations? We all know someone who knows someone, right? This is called networking. You can check out my article about networking to find out more!

  • Identify Your Network: Think about everyone you've worked with managers colleagues clients. Who would genuinely vouch for you?
  • Ask for Feedback: Don't be shy! Reach out and ask if they'd be willing to write a recommendation. Most people are happy to help by either endorsing your LinkedIn profile or even recommending you at their company.
  • Keep it Simple: Make it easy for them. Remind them of specific projects or accomplishments. The best recommendations are concise specific and focused on your strengths.

Conclusion

I've learned the hard way that in today's job market recommendations are pure gold. Use LinkedIn and other online tools to showcase your skills experience and achievements. A strong recommendation isn't just about someone saying you're great; it's about providing concrete proof that you're the best candidate for the job. Projects, portfolios, certifications: they all matter. Plus solid recommendations will skyrocket your profile!

Takeaway

Seriously don't frown upon recommendations. Build a network of people who believe in you and let them sing your praises. It could be the difference between landing your dream job and getting lost in the resume black hole.
